  第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项,并在答题卡该项涂黑。

  A

Once many years ago, I pulled a family out of a burning car somewhere in Wyoming. Last week I received a telephone call from a woman who could not stop crying as she told me that one of my stories had saved her son from committing suicide. In closing she called me a hero.

That got me thinking about what a hero is. Was I a hero because I pulled a family from a burning car? If so, how could I be a hero just because I wrote a story that saved someone’s life?

Today I looked up the word “hero” in the dictionary to see exactly what it meant. It read “a person who does something brave” and also “a person who is good and noble”.

That statement impressed me more than the part about being brave. So I thought about something very important. And I remembered what happened to me years ago.

After my marriage of twenty years ended, I was in such a condition. I was within hours trying to get up enough courage to end the pain and misery. When I returned home, someone had sent me a card in the mail which told me how much they would appreciate me as a friend. That wonderful card probably saved my life. That person, without even knowing it, saved a life and became a hero.

The many stories I kept writing in the following years saved the life of a teenage boy. In turn that makes the person who sent me the card a double hero. I suppose that is why I fight so hard to help the children now living in orphanages (孤儿院). Most children come out of these institutions with a very hard and bitter attitude against the world. The gifts we send them let them know that they have not been forgotten. Hopefully, most of them will never hurt anyone because of the kindness shown to them by those of us who cared. If it works, we will also become "heroes".

  56. The main idea of the passage is _______.

  A. why the writer should be a hero B. what a hero exactly is

  C. whether the writer is a hero D. that everyone is a hero

  57. Why did the woman call the writer a hero at the end of the call?

  A. Because his story saved her son’s life.

  B. Because he saved a family from a burning car.

  C. Because he asked her son not to kill himself.

  D. Because he was cute and kind to everybody.

  58. What does the underlined word “it” in the last sentence of Paragraph 5 refer to?

  A. The wonderful card the writer received .

  B. The action of sending the card .

  C. The fact that the sender helped the writer .

  D. The fact that the sender was a friend of the writer .

  59. According to the writer, who can be considered as a hero?

  A. A person who is brave. B. A person who writes wonderful stories.

  C. A person who can hold a door for others. D. A person who helps someone in trouble.

Sixteen-year-old Karlos Dearman’s future is looking much brighter than he might previously have imagined. “I love bikes, but I’ve never thought I’d end up with working with them,” he says. “This program has changed my life.”

Karlos is learning to refurbish (翻新) old bicycles in the workshop (车间) of ReCycle Bikes, an independent non-profit bike project in Sheffield. It provides training chances for young people aged 14 to 16 with the help of the local government, particularly those struggling in mainstream education or rejected from school.

“It’s about engaging young people with education and youth training by teaching them work and life skills,” explains Des Pearce, workshop training manager. “These young people have so much potential, but often don’t realize it.”

Founded in 2001, ReCycle Bikes repairs bicycles donated by the public, which are sold for £20 after refurbished. Abandoned bikes supplied by the government make sure a steady flow of bikes, but a recently formed partnership with Sheffield University should improve the further development.

“The student population presents a large and ready market,” says Pearce. “So we approached the university last year and offered to host bike sales on the campus (校园) . They thought it was a great idea, and agreed to provide us with more support. This means we can train young people to repair extra 500 bikes over three years.”

Having set up ReCycle Bikes on his own, Pearce now has the staff and resources to track the profession development of those who have passed through his workshop. “But we are planning exit interviews with the young people to make sure what they plan to do, and these will allow us to check on their progress,” says Pearce.

That most of the teenagers enjoy the work is, according to Pearce, easily explained. “Most kids have ridden a bike and know how to oil a chain or mend a flat tyre. As low-cost transport, cycling gives the young and old a sense of freedom and independence, and the effect on their well-being is big. Add to that a growing concern for the environment, and it’s no surprise that bike sales are on the increase.”

  60. From the passage, we know ReCycle Bikes ______.

  C. is a training project offered by the government

  D. aims at making money by selling refurbished bicycles

  B. By selling bicycles supplied by the government.

  C. By getting money from teenagers aged between 14 and 16.

  D. By repairing bicycles donated by the public and selling them.

  62. ReCycle Bikes has formed a partnership with Sheffield University because _____.

  A. students at Sheffield University can be their potential customers

  B. Sheffield University donates a lot of money to ReCycle Bikes

  C. teenagers at ReCycle Bikes can study at Sheffield University

  D. Sheffield University offers to host bike sales on the campus

  63. According to Pearce, why do most of the teenagers enjoy the work?

  A. They’d like to change their lives.

  B. They want to learn how to repair bikes.

  C. They don’t have enough money to buy cars.

  D. They are familiar with bikes and interested in them.

A dog's tail can tell you a lot more than you might think. Is it wagging(摇)to the left or is it wagging to the right?

"The direction of tail wagging does in fact matter," said Giorgio Vallortigara, a professor at the University of Trento in Italy. Professor Vallortigara finds that the way the tail is wagging can tell you a lot about a dog's state of mind — whether you're a human or another dog.

What's the difference between a left wag and a right wag? Professor Vallortigara and his colleagues have studied 43 dogs of various breeds — German Shepherds,Beagles, Boxers, Border Collies and some mutts. They find that if a dog wags its tail to the left, it's feeling anxious or nervous. The reason could be an unfamiliar or dangerous situation, an unfamiliar person, or an unfamiliar and possibly threatening dog. But if the tail is wagging to the right, it means the dog is feeling relaxed and approachable.

"The tail is a very important signal," said Thomas Reimchen, a biologist at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. " There is a lot of visual information that dogs use when communicating with each other."

How did the scientists figure all this information out? They had the dogs in their study watch videotapes of other dogs. When the dog on the tape wagged its tail to the right, they say the other dogs remained calm and cool. But when the dog on the tape wagged its tail to the left, the other dogs got anxious.

The researchers are still not exactly sure if the direction of tail wagging is something the dog does consciously. They suspect that it might be something the dog does without even thinking about it — kind of like when you get goose bumps if something scares or startles you. They plan to do more research to get more information about what dogs are thinking and feeling while they're wagging. As Reimchen said, " I'm not going to be surprised if we find all sorts of really interesting processes that nobody has ever seen before. "

  64. Professor Vallortigara'study focused on the relationship between _____.

  A. a dog’s state of mind and its owner's feeling

  B. a dog’s state of mind and the direction of its tail wagging

  C. a dog’s sense of direction and its state of mind

  D. a dog’s intention of tail wagging and its feeling

  65. According to the study, dogs which wag their tails to the left may feel _____.

  A. calm B. happy C. angry D. anxious

  66. It is implied in Thomas Reimchen's words in Paragraph 4 that_____.

  A. dogs' tails play an important role in their growth

  B. dogs show their feelings only by wagging their tails

  C. dogs get to know others by watching tail wagging

  D. dogs can understand each other by repeating tail wagging

  67. How does the passage mainly develop?

  A. By asking and analyzing questions B. By making comparisons.

  C. By following the order of time. D. By providing examples.

  D

Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it? Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power? Start writing.

By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic (逻辑) behind what you think, feel, or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your “explain power.”

Try this experiment. Explain how you’ll increase your brain power, even if you have no idea right now. Just start with anything, and create an explanation. For example, start with “I’ll learn chess,” or “I’ll read an article on the mind every week.” Explain how that will help. You’ll be surprised how often this becomes a workable plan, and if you actually do this, you’ll have a better understanding of your brain from now.

Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember. Many, if not most, highly productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you keep a journal of your ideas the next time you’re working on a big project, you’ll probably have more success.

Want to understand a topic? Write a book about it. That’s an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it, and you will understand it better. Want to invent something? Write an explanation of the problem, why you want to solve it, and why it is worth solving, and you’re half-way there.

Writers don’t always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often, they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing will help bring you to an understanding. Give it a try.

  68. What would be the best title for the text?

  A. A Way on How to Write. B. Increase Your Brain Power through Writing.

  C. How to Start Your Writing. D.Brain Power Helps Improve Your Writing.

  69. According to the text, writing can help you a lot in the following ways EXCEPT _____.

  A. the increase of your brain power B. the ability to remember

  C. the development of your interest in study D. the better understanding of a topic

  70. The underlined sentence “you’re half-way there” in the fifth paragraph implies

  that ______.

  A. you are already successful B. you still need to work hard

  C. writing can help you walk half way D. You have been on the way to success

  71. What’s the main purpose of the writer writing the text?

  A. To advise readers to start their writing. B. To explain the importance of writing.

  C. To persuade readers to become writers. D. To increase readers’ brain power.
