　　We Should not Have a Global Language

　　It could be said that the incompletion of the tower of Babel results from different languages, which facilitates cultural diversity. But it is hard to fully understand each other if you speak a different tongue, so that is why some people advocate that we should establish a global language.

　　In my opinion, it is not a good idea to establish a global language. First, language itself is part of a culture. The meaning of words in one language is endowed by their cultural context rather than dictionary definition. Second, it is hard to choose an existing language as our global language. The equality between cultures rules out the rationale that one language should be chosen over all the others. And last but not least, to create a brand-new and so-called "neutral language" is not desirable either. History has already proven the failure of the wide use of Esperanto.

　　Indeed, a global language can save us a lot of time, money and energy currently devoted to translation and interpreting. But as I see it, such a cost is worthwhile to protect cultural diversity in the world. Just as Bertrand Russell said: "Diversity is essential to happiness". (195 words)

　　Once upon a time a little old woman and a little old man lived in a cottage. One day the little old woman made a gingerbread man. She gave him currants for eyes and cherries for buttons. She put him in the oven to bake.

　　The little old woman and little old man were very hungry and wanted to eat the gingerbread man. As soon as he was cooked, the little old woman opened the oven door. The gingerbread man jumped out of the tin and ran out of the open window shouting, 'Don't eat me!'

　　The little old woman and little old man ran after the gingerbread man.

　　'Stop! Stop!' they yelled.The gingerbread man did not look back. He ran on saying,

　　'Run, run as fast as you can! You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man!'

　　Down the lane he sped when he came to a pig. 'Stop! Stop! I would like to eat you," shouted the pig. The gingerbread man was too fast. He ran on saying "Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man.”

　　A little further on he met a cow. 'Stop! Stop! little man,' called the hungry cow, 'I want to eat you.' Again the gingerbread man was too fast. He sped on down the road saying, "Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man."

　　The cow began to chase the gingerbread man along with the pig, and the little old woman. But the gingerbread man was too fast for them.

　　It was not long before the gingerbread man came to a horse. 'Stop! Stop!' shouted the horse. 'I want to eat you, little man.' But the gingerbread man did not stop. He said,'Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the gingerbread man.'

　　The horse joined in the chase. The gingerbread man laughed and laughed, until he came to a river. 'Oh no!' he cried, 'They will catch me. How can I cross the river?'

　　A sly fox came out from behind a tree. 'I can help you cross the river,' said the fox. 'Jump on to my tail and I will swim across.'

　　'You won't eat me, will you?' said the gingerbread man.

　　'Of course not,' said the fox. 'I just want to help.'

　　The gingerbread man climbed on the fox's tail. Soon the gingerbread man began to get wet. 'Climb onto my back,' said the fox. So the gingerbread man did. As he swam the fox said, 'You are too heavy. I am tired. Jump onto my nose.' So the gingerbread man did as he was told.

　　No sooner had they reached the other side, than the fox tossed the gingerbread man up in the air. He opened his mouth and 'Snap!' that was the end of the gingerbread man.

　　However, in the tide of commodity economy today, it seems that more and more people believe in money at the sacrifice of honesty. 　　In short, honesty is gold. Honest, your reputation will become great;dishonest, your name will be spoiled and your personality degraded. 　　There was once a little girl named Mary that wanted a phone so badly that her parents couldn’t help bearing her crying and got her a phone with purple dots and a little smiley face on it.

　　So life went on as usual until one day. when she was walking down town, she saw a house, filled with decorations. She knew at once that this house was having a party for somebody. Perhaps they were celebrating a birthday, or Happy Anniversary… Mary really wanted to enter the party, so she begged them to let her in and have a great time. They promised to let her in as long as she could do what they asked.

　　And that request was to make bread for the poor and buy milk for them to drink. That sounded like an easy request to grant, so she used her phone to call her dad to get some bread and milk for the poor. But there was a problem, “No phones allowed!” cried the owner of the house standing out. He held onto Mary’s phone and pulled it out of her hand. He d her phone numbers and message box, and then he took the batteries out, in case she had some other plans.

　　“There, now you couldn’t use your phone anymore,” and the owner went inside. So poor Mary used her pocket money which was for a new dress for the school party, to buy bread and milk for the poor; she was very sad, and went back and said that she had finished her work.

　　“Where is your proof?” asked the owner again, “I-I didn’t know you wanted me to give you proof?” “Well then you are out,” and he closed the door tightly.
