　　The old man and Death

　　An old man was gathering sticks in a forest.

　　At last he grew very tired and hopeless. He threw down all the sticks and cried out, "I cannot bear this life any longer. Ah, I wish Death would come and take me!"

　　As he spoke, Death appeared, and said to him, "What would you do, old man? I heard you call me."

　　"Please, sir," replied the old man, "would you help me lift this bundle of sticks up to my shoulder?"

　　老人与死神

　　有个老人在森林中砍了不少柴，十分吃力地挑着走了很远的路。

　　一路上他累极了，实在挑不动了，便扔下柴担，叫喊起来：“这种日子我受不了了，死神啊，带我走吧。”

　　这时，死神来了，对他说：“老头，你想做什么，我听见你叫我?”

　　“先生，”老人说，“您能帮忙将那担子放在我的肩上吗?”

　　即使生活不幸，人们仍需爱惜生命。

　　Ignorance of the objective world

　　We cannot understand you, interrogated the couple,We have a find command of our art, how could we not earn our living with our work? Dont make a fool of us, please.

　　Indeed, you have your skill, explained the man,But have you taken notice of the fact that shoes are made for people and the silk taffeta are for hat-making? The people of Yue dont wear shoes, for they are barefooted. Again, they like to have their hair spread out over their heads and they never use hats. To whom should you sell your shoes and hats then? Experienced though you are in the arts, yet the arts you have mastered are useless there.

　　After this explanation, the husband and wife now understood that anything that was not adaptable to the objective world would be useless and unpractical.

　　不合时宜

　　鲁国有对夫妻，男的是鞋匠，鞋子做的很好;女的是织绢能手。

　　有一天，他们商量想到越国去谋生。

　　消息传到四邻后，有人对他们说：不要到那儿去!否则你们一定无法生存的!那对夫妇说：我们不明白你的意思，我们都有一套手艺，怎么会生活不了呢?别胡说了!

　　那人说：对呀，你们虽然都有一套手艺，可是你们要知道，鞋子是给人穿的，但越国人都赤脚不穿鞋子，你们织的丝绢原是做帽子用的.，但越国人喜欢披着头发，不戴帽子，你们的本领虽大，手艺虽高，但你们做的鞋子、帽子去卖给谁呢?

　　那对夫妇这才明白，凡事如果不合时宜，不适合客观环境就不中用了。

　 up to you

　　There was once a wise old woman who lived back in the hills. All the children used to come back and ask her questions. She always gave the right answers.

　　There was a naughty little boy among the children. One day he caught a tiny bird and held it in his cupped hands. Then he gathered his friends around. He said, "Let's trick the old woman. I'll ask her what I'm holding in my hands. Of course, she'll answer that I have a bird. Then I will ask her if the bird is living or dead. If she says the bird is dead, I'll open my hands and let the bird fly away. If she says the bird is alive, I'll quickly crush it and show her the dead bird. Either way, she'll be wrong."

　　The children agreed that this was a clever plan. Up the hill they went to the old woman's hut.

　　"Granny, we have a question for you," they all shouted.

　　"What's in my hands?" asked the little boy.

　　"Well, it must be a bird," replied the old woman.

　　"But is it living or dead?" demanded the excited boy.

　　The old woman thought for a moment and then replied, "It is as you will, my child."

　　你来决定

　　从前，有一位博学的老妇人，她住在后山。过去所有的孩子都经常来找她问问题。她总是有求必应。

　　其中有一个调皮的小男孩。有一天，他抓到一只小鸟，双手捧住，然后把伙伴们叫到身边，说：

　　“咱们去哄一下那个老太太。我要问她我手里握着什么东西。她肯定会回答说我握的是小鸟。然后，我问她小鸟是活的还是死的。如果她说鸟是死的，我就张开手让小鸟飞走。如果她说小鸟是活的.，我就马上用劲一捏，让她看到那只死鸟。不管用什么方法，她都说不对。”

　　孩子们都异口同声的说这是一个聪明的计划。他们爬上山，来到了老妇人的小屋。

　　“奶奶，我们要问您一个问题。”他们都大声说道。
